THE STATE OF PGRFA
|
National Mechanism
facilitates access to and analysis of PGRFA information, assists decision-making processes, and conserves the country's historical memory on PGRFA.
Mechanism's RESOURCES A Steering Committee, national intuitions holding PGR and more than 20 national professionals, experts and farmers have contributed to the Mechanism's establishment in 2007-2008. A Report on the state of PGRFA in the country has been prepared, based on the information gathered through this process. The present country report reviews the status of plant genetic resources (PGR) in Georgia with emphasis on the state of (1) biodiversity, (2) in situ conservation management, (3) ex situ conservation management, (4) the PGRFA use, (5) national programs, training and legislation, (6) regional and international cooperation, (7) access to PGRFA, benefits sharing arising out of their use and farmer rights and (8) contribution of PGRFA management to food security and development of the country. A Database including information both in Georgia and English on in situ and ex situ PGRFA conservation, breeding and seed production. It also includes the most comprehensive inventory of national PGRFA-related institutions, experts, publications, laws and projects, as well as of cultivated varieties. This database serves the State PGR Committee and national institutions as a working instrument for drafting strategies and plans.
